Sonal Gupta is an Indian-born, Canada-based journalist and documentary producer. With a Master’s degree in Journalism from the University of British Columbia and documentary training in Los Angeles, she blends research, film, and journalism.
Her focus on solutions journalism drives her exploration of climate and community issues, covering environmental sustainability, public health, cultural movement and social justice.
Sonal’s work has earned notable recognition, including being a finalist for the Student Award of Excellence at the 2023 Canadian Association of Journalists for “The Artist Motel,” a mini-documentary featured in The Tyee. She also received the 2022 Jack Webster Student Journalism Award and the Gold Award for Best Academic Video Content at the Canadian Online Publishing Awards 2022. She is also a co-author of the Empowerment Journalism Guide, a handbook that shifts away from traditional, extractive storytelling toward more collaborative, participatory, and reciprocal approaches. It won the Gold Anthem Award in the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion category.
She is trained in Solutions Journalism by the Solutions Journalism Network and was the first alumni of Story Money Impact’s Empowering BC Creators for Community program.
When she’s not filming or digging into facts, she embraces what she considers the luxe life—hot yoga, cycling, tossing things in a pan with blind hope and staring at the sky for answers.

I acknowledge that I live and work within the ancestral, traditional and unceded territory of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Tsleil-waututh Nations.
